A guide to reducing the appearance of stretch marks!*

During pregnancy or after childbirth it is extremely common to experience stretch marks. These are caused by the skin stretching at an abnormally fast rate. Some women do manage to escape without experiencing these scars during pregnancy, but they are in the lucky minority.
How sever your stretch marks are will vary considerably from woman to woman, although you can put a few simple steps in place to reduce their appearance:

Creams & lotions.

Whilst unfortunately there is no miracle ointment, stretch marks can be lessened, by certain creams, lotions and herbal oils that have been designed to deeply moisturise and regenerate the skin and reduce the appearance of these marks. For example, Johnson’s Skin Perfecting Oil works by gently stripping away the top layers of the skin. In doing so, it helps to “heal” the scars caused by stretch marks.
Research has proven that moisturisers with high levels of both collagen and vitamin E provide the skin with greater elasticity and are effective in reducing the appearance of stretch marks.

Tanning products

If you’re going on holiday or are heading to the swimming pool and are worried about your stretch marks being visible, you’ll be pleased to know that you can temporarily reduce the appearance of stretch marks by covering them with tanning lotion.
Stretch marks, like scars, are unable to tan themselves, so if you spend time in the sun, your stretch marks may actually become more visible as you tan the surrounding areas.
Tanning lotion has the opposite effect as it will darken the whole area, including the stretch marks, thus making them less noticeable.

Drink plenty of water and have a healthy diet

As with most health and beauty issues, what we put into our body is just as important as the products that we use externally.
Keeping yourself well hydrated by drinking plenty of water will increase the elasticity of your skin and could make the scar become lighter in colour and less noticeable.
Likewise, eating a healthy diet that includes foods which have high levels of vitamins A and C as well as zinc and proteins, will help to improve the health of your skin and can minimise the appearance of stretch marks and other blemishes and spots. Try eating a diet rich in fresh fruit and vegetables, meat, poultry and eggs.
