Wedding planning | The right music for your wedding

Weddings are a treat for the senses. The bride, the flowers and the venue all look beautiful. Everyone is dressed in his or her best clothes, so they look amazing as well.

Your sense of taste is assaulted, in a good way, by wonderful food and drink. There is always plenty of joy, fun and laughter at a good wedding. If a wedding is planned and executed well it is a fantastic and memorable event.

A lot of work goes into organising the perfect wedding and one important aspect is the music. It is important for couples to think about and get the music right. The music that is played is important because it has a big impact on the ambience that is created during the ceremony and the reception.

Music for the ceremony

The type of music you choose for the ceremony depends in part on the venue and the ambience you want to create. Most venues have some restrictions on the type of music that is played, but these days most are very accommodating. However, this does mean that it is important to check what is allowed well in advance.

Live music is always nice if you can arrange it. Most venues have good acoustics or a PA system, so you can easily hire a small group of classical musicians, a pianist or a choir to provide music during the ceremony.

Music during the reception

When it is time for the reception, you may want to have background music being played during the canap├ęs. Again, you can hire a group to play live music. However, many couples opt for pre-recorded music or not to have any music played at this stage of their wedding reception. You need to check with the reception venue to make sure that what you have in mind is possible.

Music for the reception

Not everyone has dancing at their reception, but most do. Live music is much more fun than recorded music and it sounds better, so most people hire a wedding band. However, you need to take your time when hiring a wedding band. This is not a job that you should leave to the last minute.
Ideally, you need to hear the band you are planning to hire play live. If you start your search early, you will be able to check out how each band sounds and choose the best.

You also need to bear in mind that bands get booked up months, sometimes over a year, in advance. The better the band is the more likely it is that they will be fully booked a long way out.

It is also important to book early to give your chosen band time to learn any special songs that you want, which are not currently on their playlists. Most bands will happily learn an extra song or two provided they feel they can sing that style of song.
